Romania’s E-Invoicing Mandate: A Breath of Relief with Extended Grace Period

In a decisive move to aid businesses in their digital transition, the Romanian Ministry of Finance announced on March 22, 2024, an extension of the grace period for e-invoicing compliance. The new deadline, set for May 31, 2024, postpones penalties originally slated to commence in April 2024. This extension under the Draft Government Emergency Order gives taxpayers additional time to align their invoicing processes with the RO e-factura platform, marking a significant shift towards simplifying compliance. Importantly, the order clarifies that penalties will be applied for general non-compliance, not on a per-invoice basis, easing the pressure on businesses striving to meet the mandate. This strategic deferral highlights the government’s commitment to a smooth transition for all stakeholders involved in Romania’s e-invoicing ecosystem.
